NASA Seeks Ways to ‘Destroy’ the End of Life International Space Station!

The International Space Station (ISS), which has hosted numerous missions for 23 years since its first piece was launched in 1998, will soon expire. Various studies have been carried out on how to destroy the ISS for a few years, which was initially estimated to have an average life of 30 years.

One of the first options discussed regarding this plan was Russia’s option to push the station out of orbit into the atmosphere with at least two Progress spacecraft. The ISS, which would melt some of it while entering the atmosphere with the thrust process, would then fall into a certain region in the Pacific Ocean. NASA stated that there are different methods evaluated together with this plan.

Russia’s Target Is Clear, But NASA Looks Undecided!

While both NASA, Russia and other international partners are discussing how to destroy the ISS, it is necessary to determine when it will happen. Russia is the only ISS partner with a clear goal in this regard. Russia’s goal is to completely abandon the station by 2025.

However, NASA and its partners do not have a clear plan in this regard yet. One of the clearest statements made by NASA on this subject dates back to last November. In the statement, the authorities stated that the use of the ISS was officially allowed until 2024, but there was no harm in using it technically until 2028.

It is thought that the process will not take very short, as there are decisions that both Russia and NASA should take jointly and that are likely to be very costly. However, the lack of a disposal plan for this giant station, which should be destroyed only a few years later, and the ongoing indecision also cause insecurity.
